Youngsters train math

Youth trains mathematics (JuMa) is a nationwide support measure for mathematically interested and gifted students from the 7th grade. The program is sponsored by Education & Talent, the federal and state talent development center. The program participants are encouraged in the development of their mathematical talent and continuously brought up to the level of national mathematics competitions such as the federal mathematics competition . The early funding is intended to create the basis that mathematical and scientific excellence can also be achieved in Germany in the future. In particular, it is the aim of JuMa to find and prepare suitable candidates for participation in the international mathematics competitions EMO (European Mathematical Olympiad) and IMO ( International Mathematical Olympiad ).

On the one hand, JuMa provides the participants with basic mathematical knowledge that is required to successfully work on complex tasks, but is often not dealt with in school lessons. On the other hand, they are made familiar with important heuristic principles and solution strategies. Correspondence circles and seminars are used as funding instruments . Experienced mathematicians are responsible for managing and supervising the seminars, as well as setting tasks, correcting exams and supervising correspondence letters.

The selection of the participants in class 7 takes place after the end of the state round of the Mathematics Olympiad by the state commissioners of the federal states for the Mathematics Olympiad in consultation with those responsible for further mathematics funding projects. The basis for the number of participants in a federal state is a key based on the respective population. The participants from grades 8, 9 and 10 are selected based on their performance in the previous JuMa run and invited to participate further. A lateral entry is possible in justified exceptional cases.
