Jumbo truck

European jumbo road train

As jumbo trucks are called truck with a particularly large load volume, usually 100 cubic meters or more. Jumbo trucks are mainly used to transport bulky goods, such as insulation or packaging material. Jumbo trucks are also often used in subcontracting for the automotive industry, as a loading height of at least 3 m is often required. The loading height can be increased to 3.20 m to 3.30 m with a lifting roof for loading and unloading, usually on both sides.

Since the permissible total height of a vehicle is limited to 4 m in accordance with the StVZO and EU Directive 96/53 / EC, the jumbo truck has a higher loading volume than a normal truck due to a lower loading area. This is achieved through structural features, in some cases also through smaller tires. Due to the low loading area, loading and unloading such trucks at loading ramps can be problematic if they cannot be varied in height.

The largest possible loading volume of up to 125 m³ is achieved by jumbo trucks with a fixed body. In the case of articulated trucks , vehicle combinations with a so-called mega- trailer are also referred to as jumbo . However, since a semi-trailer truck is shorter than a truck trailer due to legal regulations, they only have a loading volume of around 100 m³. These mega-trailers are often used in subcontracting for the automotive industry, as the 3 m loading height enables optimal use of the space thanks to standardized and easily stackable load carriers. Compared to the road train, the articulated lorry enables fast loading and unloading without time-consuming, multiple maneuvering, which is often an important criterion for just-in-time deliveries in the automotive industry.
