The Young Chamber Orchestra Reinickendorf from the Berlin - Reinickendorfer district Tegel was founded in 1957 by the composer and music teacher Helmuth Sommer under the name Jugendstreichorchester Reinickendorf . The amateur orchestra is now a working group of the youth department of the Reinickendorf district (Berlin). The orchestra gives young musicians a chance to play together.

Quite a few music teachers of the older generation who were or are no longer active in Berlin were once students of Helmuth Sommer and also members of this orchestra. For the 50th year of its existence, the orchestra played an anniversary concert in June 2007 with great success in the chamber music hall of the Berlin Philharmonic .

Since the death of its founder in 1993, the orchestra has been headed by his great-nephew Jürgen Mittag. The concert master is Deborah Oskamp, student and foster daughter of Helmuth Sommer.
