Junkers Jumo 223

The Junkers Jumo 223 was a water-cooled two-stroke diesel - aircraft engine with 24 cylinders of the Junkers .

The Jumo 223 piston engine had a diamond arranged at the corners, four crankshafts with four cylinder banks in between , each with six cylinders and twelve pistons. Two of the total of 48 pistons worked with a common combustion chamber on opposing crankshafts, as was the case with the other Junkers two-stroke diesel engines ( opposed piston engine ). Development began around 1939 and continued until 1942 when the jet engines tied up development capacity and the project was halted.

Right from the start, the motor was intended to drive a counter-rotating double propeller and had a corresponding reduction gear with a gear ratio of 3.86. The stroke and bore were smaller than on the Jumo 207 in order to be able to increase the speed level. In addition to a purge air fan, a turbocharger was also installed. On the test bench, the first embodiment 2,500 hp (1839 kw) made at 4400 min -1 . The engine only ran on the test bench. A version with a modified turbocharger was designed for a full pressure height of 10,000 meters, but was no longer built. The projected Jumo 224 was similar in construction, but with a displacement of 73 liters, it was considerably larger.
