The Jura Zoo in Neumarkt in der Oberpfalz was a small private zoo in the Upper Palatinate . About 300 animals lived on the approximately 7000 m² site. Since October 4, 2017, the zoo has been closed for renovation work. It was originally supposed to reopen in March 2018, then the reopening date was postponed several times. It has been certain since February 2020 that it will remain closed.
The zoo included Kaptriele , vulture ravens and servals . The zoo took part in a joint breeding program for white-handed gibbons with the Tel Aviv Zoo .
The zoo, which opened in 1989, was family-owned and was largely financed by donations and gifts.
In 2007 the zoo was to be expanded by 5000 m². In the extension building that had already been completed there was a new enclosure for the Lesser Flamingos , a duck lake , a kangaroo enclosure , an aviary for English fighters and one for the red macaws .
Its founder Fritz Pelech died on July 30th, 2007.
Criticism of the keeping of animals
At the end of July 2017, members of a citizens' initiative called the Bavarian Animal Rights Action Group published video and photo recordings from the zoo and reported alleged deficiencies to the veterinary office. We are talking about "injured birds, behavioral monkeys, dirty floors and stinking water pits".
The zoo was then reported across Germany. At the beginning of August, the animal rights organization PETA filed a criminal complaint with the Nuremberg-Fürth public prosecutor's office for violating the Animal Welfare Act. The Great Ape Project then also visited the zoo and expressed sharp criticism, especially with regard to the keeping of monkeys.
The operator then gave several animals to other zoos, but according to his statement not as a consequence of the allegations. In addition, a support association is to be founded. In mid-December 2017, twelve monkeys (long-tailed and capuchin monkeys) were brought from the zoo to the Wales Ape & Monkey Sanctuary in Wales. According to Colin Goldner of the Great Ape Project , which helped transport the monkeys, the zoo is being transformed into a petting zoo.
At the end of May 2018, the investigation against the Jura Zoo was closed. The public prosecutor's office came to the conclusion that there was no evidence that animals had suffered pain or suffering through rawness.
