Construction of a bridge over the Jökulsá á Brú near Kárahnjúkar

The Kárahnjúkar are two palagonite cones ( Isl . Hnjúkur : mountain peak, singular) in the Icelandic highlands north of Vatnajökull with a height of 838 and 760 m. They were formed about 250,000 years ago by lava eruptions under the glaciers of that time.

The two cones was a large hydroelectric plant built, the Kárahnjúkavirkjun that the aluminum plant of Reyðarfjörður power. To the east and west of the summit, two of the three huge dams were built, which are required to generate electricity from the reservoir. Due to the construction, large natural areas are lost. B.
