A calf hut , also known as a calf igloo , is a refuge for calves .

A calf hut is usually made of polyethylene or glass fiber reinforced plastic , which is open to the bottom and has an entrance. A metal fence is usually attached to the open side. The bottom of the calf hutches with straw scattered . Calf igloos are located outside of buildings, as fresh air is beneficial for the health of the calves. The advantage of calf igloos is that the young animals cannot come into contact with pathogens in the fresh air and the climate is largely optimal for their development. The igloo still offers protection against negative weather influences such as wind, rain and snowfall. To achieve this protective effect, the opening of the calf igloo should not face the weather side.

Calf huts are offered in different sizes to accommodate from one to over 10 animals (so-called group igloos ).
