Cologne cellar

The premises in which the Video Assist Center of the German Football League is stationed are referred to as the “Kölner Keller” .

Since the 2017/18 season, the video assistant has been used for video evidence in Bundesliga games. The work rooms for this activity are located in the basement of the Cologne Broadcasting Center in the Deutz district of Cologne , which is why the name "Kölner Keller" has become natural for "one of the most important jobs in German professional football" - according to sports journalists. The room was also known as the "open plan office for video assistants".

The "Kölner Keller" is around 100 square meters, windowless and darkened. Referees follow Bundesliga matches at six workstations in order to support their colleagues on the pitch in case of doubt. They are all Bundesliga referees and specially trained for video use; they wear referee clothing when they work.

In the stadiums, 19 to 21 cameras record the games; 300 images per second can be transmitted. These recordings are observed at each work station by a video assistant, another assistant - both referees - and two operators ; you have four monitors with different functions at your disposal. The monitors show the live image, four camera perspectives are shown on a touchscreen monitor and can be zoomed by hand; In addition, another live image is shown, delayed by three seconds. The operators pass the pictures to the referees sitting next to them, which they request for assessment. The calibrated offside line is an important technical tool .

Communication between the employees in the “Kölner Keller” and the respective referee on site takes place via a computer network using IP telephony , and within the stadiums then via radio. The referee in the stadium has the final say in the decisions.

Journalists were allowed to visit the cellar for the first time in April 2019.
