Kölnische Volkszeitung

The Kölnische Volkszeitung and Handelsblatt was founded by Josef Bachem in 1868 after the forerunners of the Kölner Blätter (1860) . It appeared in the JP Bachem publishing house and book printer in Cologne .

Since April 1, 1860, Bachem tried to establish a Catholic-oriented daily newspaper on the Cologne newspaper market alongside the liberal Kölnische Zeitung from DuMont . A first attempt was made in 1860 with the Kölner Blätter .

It was only really successful under the name Kölnische Volkszeitung from 1868. The newspaper appeared every day except Mondays. It later appeared twice a day and had an entertainment supplement on Sundays. From 1867 Antonius Fromm was one of the editors .

In particular under the direction of Julius Bachem , who was initially editor-in-chief together with Hermann Cardauns , it experienced a strong rise. The paper owed this not least to the Kulturkampf and the consequent emergence of a Catholic milieu . Julius Bachem later took over the management of the publishing house. Until 1914 he had a major influence on the newspaper. At the turn of the century she became the mouthpiece of the Cologne-Mönchengladbach direction in the center dispute and in the trade union dispute, which advocated reforms within the center party.

In 1871 the circulation was seven thousand copies. In 1875 it reached almost two thirds of the circulation of the Kölnische Zeitung . In the following decades the newspaper developed into the leading Catholic daily newspaper in western Germany. There were no equivalent newspapers in either southern or eastern Germany. In 1914 the paper appeared three times a day with 30,000 copies.

The Kölnische Volkszeitung was discontinued in May 1941 for "economic reasons".
