Antonius Fromm

Antonius Fromm (born September 17, 1840 in Hildesheim , † February 29, 1916 in Osnabrück ) was a German journalist and publisher. He founded the Neue Volksblätter, from which the Osnabrücker Volkszeitung emerged, a predecessor of the Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung .

Life

Fromm was a Roman Catholic. He attended the Catholic high school Josephinum in Hildesheim. He studied philosophy and German at the University of Göttingen . He became a journalist and from 1867 worked as an editor in the feature section of the Kölnische Volkszeitung . In 1868 he founded the Neue Volksblätter in Hildesheim , which was supposed to look after the interests of the Catholics in the province of Hanover

The newspaper initially appeared three times a week and from 1870 onwards, after it was moved to Osnabrück, daily. It was renamed the Osnabrücker Volkszeitung in 1874 , and Fromm was also editor-in-chief of the newspaper, which understood itself to be the organ of the Center Party . After 1900 the newspaper had 13,000 subscribers. During the Kulturkampf in the German Empire , Fromm was tried several times. Fromm died in 1916, the newspaper was edited by his son Leopold Fromm . From 1934 the newspaper was again entitled Neue Volksblätter; it appeared until 1943.

Fromm was buried in the Hasefriedhof in Osnabrück .
