history

The new English oak in November 2017

The old royal oak stood on Königsplatz (today: Schwabenplatz), was struck by lightning at the end of the 1970s and felled six months later. After the felling, it was estimated to be around 500 years old. It has been called the royal oak because of its size. In 1993, the old tree stump and its roots were dug up and a new English oak was planted in the same place .
