The king pin , also called king pin , creates a connection between two components that can move in several spatial directions.

Examples

  • With articulated steering , the king pin is the connection between the front and rear of the vehicle.
  • With a magnetic compass , the kingpin has to compensate for slight inclination forces of the needle. The whole compass is z. B. stored on ships with a cardanic suspension .
  • On the railway , the kingpin is the connection between the car body and the bogie . It is usually referred to as a pivot and usually only transmits horizontal forces. The vertical forces are partially or completely supported by other systems.
  • In the case of a semitrailer tractor , the semi-trailer is connected to the tractor unit (truck) by the king pin when hitching up . During the journey, lateral inclinations of the trailer and also the movements in the direction of travel relative to the tractor are compensated for via the fifth wheel . This was standardized worldwide to 2 and 3.5 inch diameters.
  • In wind turbines , the kingpin is the vertical axis with a ball on it. The tower house rotates around this sphere - and not in every case strictly horizontally. The sphere, as the end of the axis, enables the tower house to be inclined several times.
