Kōdai-in ( Japanese 高 台 院 ; * 1540s, † October 17, 1624 in Kyōto ) was the wife of the Japanese regent Toyotomi Hideyoshi .

Life

She was born the second eldest daughter of Sugihara Sadatoshi and Asahi-dono. Your year of birth was either 1541 (Tenbun 10), 1548 (Tenbun 17) or 1549 (Tenbun 18), the latter being the most likely. Her proper name is also unknown. This was Neneko ( 寧 子 ) or Yoshiko ( 吉 子 ), where Toyotomi called her Nene ( ね ね or 寧 々 ) and signed her with One ( お ね ), Ne ( 祢 / ね ) or Nei ( ). Others called her by her title Kita no mandokoro ( 北 政 所 ), and after she entered the nunnery she took the name Kōdai-in.

Toyotomi Hideyoshi married the young Kōdai-in in 1561. Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who came from the peasant class, gained considerable influence by marrying the nobles, and some of his later vassals were relatives of Kōdai-in. Although their marriage remained childless, they were married until Toyotomi Hideyoshi died in 1598, who, however, as was customary at the time, had a large number of concubines or concubines. She accompanied his rise from a foot soldier of Oda Nobunagas to the most powerful man in Japan. After his death she became a nun, founded the Kōdai-ji temple and developed into an important patron of the arts. She lived in Kyoto , where she died in 1624.
