The Kōsan-ji ( Japanese 耕 三 寺 ) is a temple of the Jōdo-Shinshū -direction of Buddhism on the island of Ikuchijima (生 口 島) belonging to the city of Onomichi ( Hiroshima Prefecture ).

history

The builder of the temple was the entrepreneur Kanemoto Fukumatsu (金 本 福松; 1891–1970). He had founded the company for steel roughing "Tōyōkeidai Kōkanseiszōsho" (東洋 経 大 鋼管 製造 所) in 1920 and had come to prosperity. For his mother he had the property "Chōseikaku" (潮聲 閣), about "Tide Hearing Pavilion", built. When his mother died in 1934, he gave up his business the following year and became a priest under the name Kōsan (耕 三) and began to develop the area around the Chōseikaku into a temple complex. In the following thirty years a spacious complex was created based on the buildings of famous temples in Japan.

The attachment

  • The gate "Shishinden gomon" (紫宸 殿 御 門) became the main gate (山門, Sammon),
  • After the famous "Yōmei-mon" of the Tōshō-gū in Nikkō , Kōsan had the "Kōyō-mon" (孝養 門) built,
  • the "Hōōdō" (鳳凰 堂) of the Byōdō-in became the model for the main hall (本 堂, Hondō) of this temple,
  • for the treasure houses "Hōhōzō" (法宝 蔵) and "Bōhōzō" (僧宝 蔵) was the Kondō (金堂) of the Shitennō-ji godfather.

A total of 15 replica buildings can be found on the site, which are registered as “material cultural treasures” (有形 文化 財, Yūkei bunkazai).

A new creation especially for this temple is the complex “Miraishin no oka” (未来 心 の 丘) - “Hill of the future of the heart”, designed from marble blocks on the hill above the temple. It was created from Carrara marble over a period of 12 years by the sculptor Kuetani Ittō (杭 谷 一 東, born 1942).

Treasures of the temple

After the Pacific War , Kōsan decided to open his collection of Buddhist sculptures, pictures and writings, tea makers and other cultural assets to the public. For this he converted the entire temple area into a museum in accordance with the Japanese Museum Law (博物館 法, Hakubutsukan-hō). The collection includes over 2000 objects, 19 of which are registered as an Important Cultural Property of Japan . These include a standing Shaka Nyorai made of wood (木造 釈 迦 如 来 立 像, Honzō Shaka Nyorai rissō), a representation of Buddha at the entrance to Paradise (絹本 着色 仏 涅槃 図, Kempon Chakushoku Butsu Nehan-zu), a representation of Ki no Tsurayuki , one of the 36 poets. - Another 40 registered as important art objects (重要 美術品, Jūyō bijutsuhin).
