Kōzan-ji ( Japanese 高 山寺 ) is a Buddhist temple in the north of Kyoto . He joined in 1994 as part of the ensemble Historic Kyoto (Kyoto, Uji and Otsu Cities) to UNESCO - World Heritage Site and is known for the possession of the scrolls of fun animals . The temple is an independent temple under the Shingon teachings.

Located in the north-west of the city of Kyoto in the mountains, the temple has existed since the Heian period , was then rebuilt by the priest Myōe (1173-1232) and won many followers. The Sekisui-in ( 石 水 院 ) building of the temple is a national treasure .

The temple is also known for its tea garden and the fall foliage that surrounds it.

Treasures

The temple also has valuable scrolls and scriptures, including the following national treasures from the Kamakura period :

  • Buddhist worship image ( 仏 眼 仏 母 , Butsugen-Butusumo zō)
  • "Picture priest Myōe sitting on the branch" ( 明 恵 上人 樹上 坐禅 像 , Myōe-shōnin jujō zazen zō)
  • "Scrolls of Funny Animals" ( 鳥 獣 戯 画 絵 巻 , Chōjū giga emaki)
  • "Scrolls on the founder of Kegon-shū" ( 華 厳 宗 祖師 絵 伝 六 巻 , Kegon-shū sōshi eden rokken)

Half of the originals of the Funny Animals are kept in the Kyōto National Museum and half in the Tokyo National Museum. However, copies can be seen in the temple itself.

The important cultural assets include - in addition to other pictures and scrolls - sculptures made of wood, such as the Hyakukō-shin (白光 神) and Zemmyō-shim (善 妙 神), Shintō deities, which are ascribed to the sculptor Tankei .
