The Kyōto National Museum ( Japanese 京都 国立 博物館 , Kyōto Kokuritsu Hakubutsukan ) was founded in 1897 as the Kyōto Imperial Museum ( 帝国 京都 博物館 ) and is one of the oldest and most important art museums in Japan . It is in the district Higashiyama-ku in Kyoto . The focus of his collection is on premodern Japanese and Asian art.
Meaning for Japan
It has more than 12,000 exhibits, 27 of which are registered as the national treasure of Japan and 181 others are registered as an important national cultural asset (as of 2006). Many exhibits come from the various imperial houses or from the country's temples. There is also a large collection of photographs of art objects.
history
Construction work began in 1889 together with those at the Tokyo Imperial Museum ( Tokyo National Museum ) and the Nara Imperial Museum ( Nara National Museum ). It was completed in October 1895. The main exhibition hall ( 特別 展示 館 , Tokubetsu tenjikan , German "special exhibition hall") was designed by Tōkuma Katayama .
In 1969 the special exhibition hall, the main gate, the ticket booth and the fences were named as "Old Imperial Museum Kyōto" as an important cultural asset .
The new exhibition hall ( 平常 展示 館 , Heijō tenjikan , Eng . "Normal exhibition hall"), which was completed in 1966 based on a design by Keiichi Morita , was demolished at the beginning of the 21st century and replaced by the Heisei Chishinkan extension (design: Yoshio Taniguchi ; Completion: 2013) replaced.
