National Institutes for Cultural Heritage

National Institutes for Cultural Heritage ( Japanese 国立 文化 財 機構 , Kokuritsu Bunkazai Kikō , literally: "Organization of National Institutions for Cultural Goods", short: NICH) is a Japanese Independent Administrative Corporation ( 独立 行政 法人 , dokuritsu gyōsei hōjin , self-governing body ) that subordinate to the Office for Cultural Affairs . The organization was founded in April 2007 with the aim of collecting, making accessible and preserving Japanese cultural assets. This institution is an umbrella organization in which the national museums have been combined with the research institutes for cultural goods. It is headquartered in the Tokyo National Museum .

The organization is also an important point of contact for non-governmental organizations such as religious communities and private collectors. It acquires and restores cultural assets and makes them accessible to the public and research. It also organizes nationwide educational and international information events. This also includes organizing exhibitions outside of Japan.

The associated research institutes also process the knowledge gained, make them available to the public and researchers, and refine research methods such as dendrochronology . This can also improve the methods of restoration.

  5. the National Research Institute for Cultural Properties Tōkyō ( Tokyo Research Institute for Cultural Properties )
  6. the National Research Institute for Cultural Properties, Nara ( Nara National Research Institute for Cultural Properties )
  7. the International Research Center for Intangible Cultural Heritage in the Asia-Pacific Region ( ア ジ ア 太平洋 無形 文化遺産 研究 セ ン タ ー , International Research Center for Intangible Cultural Heritage in the Asia-Pacific Region ) under the auspices of UNESCO
