Ételfay ( Picard : Tèrfayin) is a northern French municipality with 378 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Somme in the region of Hauts-de-France . The municipality is located in the arrondissement of Montdidier and belongs to the canton of Roye .

geography

The municipality is located in the Santerre countryside around 3.5 km east-northeast of Montdidier and is adjacent to the D135A département road.

history

Finds of cut flint suggest prehistoric settlement. Remains of a Gallo-Roman villa and a brick factory were found in the municipality. In the Middle Ages, basements (muches) were dug into the ground from chalk. The church was built in the 12th century. In 1832 the vault of the choir collapsed. Since 1490 the estate has been in the hands of the de Vendeuil family, whose coat of arms is that of the municipality. In 1653 the place was sacked and sacked by Spanish troops. Ételfay, occupied by German troops, was liberated in June 1918. The community received the Croix de guerre 1914-1918 as an award .
