Lists on the subject

The chain SAW or ChainSAW light machine gun developed by Knight's Armament Company (KAC) is a prototype that will not go into series production.

History and technology

The Chain SAW was presented to the public for the first time at the 2009 edition of the SHOT Show in Las Vegas. KAC made it clear from the start that it was just an ergonomic prototype or a fun project. With the Chain SAW, KAC wanted to develop a weapon in which the increasingly extensive electronic aids for target acquisition also have an impact on the structure of the weapon. This is not really the case with many projects. At KAC, it was assumed that future aiming systems would be so effective that the weapon no longer had to be shouldered. This can be seen on the SAW chain by the fact that a conventional piston is completely missing. Instead, a handle similar to that of a chainsaw was used as a piston and on the front shaft, which also led to the name Chain SAW, where SAW stands for Squad Automatic Weapon.

The light machine gun itself can only be fired from the hip. The Stoner LMG , built by Knight's, was used as the basis and can be equipped with an in-house silencer. Another curious feature should be the 37 mm underflow grenade launcher. According to the KAC, the grenade launcher should only be used to fire flares in order to make it clear that the shooter needs ammunition if there is a shortage of ammunition.
