KARTA center

KARTA-Zentrum ( Polish Ośrodek KARTA ) / Stiftung Zentrum KARTA ( Polish Fundacja Ośrodka KARTA ) is a non-governmental organization dedicated to documenting and communicating the latest Polish and East-Central European history (especially the 20th century) and the spread of tolerance and democratic values Goal sets.

history

Its founders were an underground magazine under the same name (Karta) in January 1982 after the declaration of a state of war in Poland and in November 1987 the Ostarchiv (documentation on the former Polish eastern regions and their population as well as the Poles in the USSR). KARTA has been an official foundation since 1990. Since 1991 the Stiftung Zentrum KARTA has carried out many initiatives, projects and collections that have emerged over the years.

The Foundation Zentrum KARTA is mainly concerned with recording Polish and Central and Eastern European history by

  • collects the oral certificates and shares them with the general public. a. makes available on the internet, oral history team
  • Rescues and collects files, files rescue service, and makes them available to interested parties in archives and collections.
  • The KARTA Center Foundation maintains several of its own archives and collections:
    • "Index of the Oppressed" 1939–1956
    • Archives of the Opposition of the People's Republic of Poland 1956–1989
    • Archive of the victims of the Polish-Ukrainian conflict in the 1940s

Exhibitions

The exhibitions are mostly shown in the “House of Encounter with History” or at other friendly institutions.

Quarterly “Karta” and publications

The development of the Stiftung Zentrum KARTA is closely related to that of the first political magazine “Karta”. The foundation now also owns a publishing house that publishes many publications on the history of the 20th century.

Student competition "History up close"

The student competition “History up close” consists of project-oriented work by the students, most of which are encouraged by teachers or librarians. The students work through the experience and everyday history of their environment in various ways. The topics of the competitions were:

  • 1996/97 - "Everyday life in Poland 1944–1956"
  • 1997/98 - "Citizens - Rulers 1956–1980"
  • 1998/99 - “The most important events in the history of my company. Contemporary witnesses and testimonies "
  • 2000/01 - "Work in the People's Republic of Poland - for me, for society, for the system?"
  • 2001/02 - “Stranger among the locals. 20th century experience "
  • 2002/03 - "People on the move - migration, social advancement, social degradation 1914–1989"
  • 2003/04 - "Disputes about the memory of the past - monuments, cemeteries, patron saints"
  • 2004/05 - "Everyday life at the time of the change in 1944–1945"
  • 2005/06 - "Religious Life in the People's Republic of Poland - Individual, Community, Institution"
  • 2006/07 - "Rebels in the 20th Century"
  • 2007/08 - "The homeland - in memories and testimonies"
  • 2008/09 - "The year 1989: end, turning point, beginning ..."
  • 2009/10 - "Persecuted by World War II - Fate and Memory"

"Oral History" project

A group of employees maintains contact with many contemporary witnesses in Poland, uses the oral history method to record and collect interviews, as well as written reports.

Historical websites

The KARTA Center Foundation oversees and develops websites on historical topics such as: "Learning from history", "Oral history certificates", "20. Century".

Networking the mediators of history

In 2001, the KARTA Center Foundation participated in the creation of EUSTORY, the European network of organizers of school history projects, and since then has participated in summer schools, autumn academies and general assemblies.

  • 1990 - Polish Journalists' Association Prize - for a new way of writing about the latest history
  • 2001 - Award of the Polish Foreign Minister for Promotion of Poles Abroad
  • 2001 - Saint George Prize from “Tygodnik Powszechny” magazine for the fight against forgetfulness - for Zbigniew Gluza
  • 2002 - Jerzy Giedroyc Prize from the magazine "Rzeczpospolita"
  • 2002 - Grand Prix in the Polish “Pro Publico Bono” competition for the best civil society initiative in Poland
  • 2005 - Office for War Veterans and Victims of Repression Prize
  • 2008 - Prize from Memoria Iustorum for supporting the Polish-Ukrainian dialogue
  • 2008 - Prize in the Polish “Pro Publico Bono” competition for supporting civil society in Poland
  • 2009 - Grand Prix in “Pro Publico Bono” for the best civil society initiative of the last 20 years in independent Poland
