KDE neon is a Linux distribution developed by KDE , which is based on the latest Ubuntu - LTS version. It is bundled with a number of additional software repositories and contains the latest 64-bit versions of the Plasma 5 desktop environment , the Qt 5 framework and other compatible KDE software. The program, first announced in June 2016 by Kubuntu founder Jonathan Riddell after he left Canonical (Ubuntu's parent company), has been adopted by a steadily growing number of Linux users and regularly appears in the top 20 popularity charts of DistroWatch.com. It is aimed at the same user group as Ubuntu's official KDE Plasma distribution, Kubuntu, and differs mainly in the much shorter period in which users receive updated Qt and KDE software. It is offered in four release channels: User, Testing, Unstable and Developer Edition.

The KDE Neon Linux distribution focuses on KDE development. Emphasis is placed on cutting-edge software packages obtained directly from KDE , giving programmers early access to new features, but possibly at the cost of increased vulnerability to software failure .

KDE neon announced in January 2017 that the distribution had switched its installation program from Ubiquity to Calamares because Ubiquity "does not have some functions".

In February 2018, the KDE Neon developers removed the LTS editions from the download page, but left these editions in the download mirrors because "a lot of people asked which edition to use and what the difference is".

In May 2018, KDE began migrating KDE Neon from Ubuntu 16.04 to Ubuntu 18.04. The Ubuntu 18.04-based KDE Neon pre-release versions were released in August 2018.

Differences from Kubuntu

Since Kubuntu is also based on Ubuntu and the KDE Plasma desktop is pre-installed instead of Gnome , KDE Neon is often confused with Kubuntu and vice versa. While Kubuntu supplements the current Ubuntu versions with a plasma environment, KDE Neon focuses on delivering the latest (developer) versions of Plasma and the associated applications without necessarily keeping the underlying Ubuntu program packages up to date.

KDE Neon always offers very current versions of KDE Plasma for installation, while the plasma version provided by Kubuntu can be comparatively old, depending on the respective Ubuntu release.

hardware

The KDE Slimbook (released in March 2017) and KDE Slimbook II (released in 2018) have KDE Neon preinstalled.
