Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The KEGG or the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes is a freely accessible database with structured information about the structures of biomolecules , drugs , reaction equations , metabolic pathways , genes , and the functional hierarchy of biological systems in various organisms.

Its aim is to represent the entire cells, organisms and ultimately the biosphere bioinformatically in order to be able to make computer-aided predictions of complex cell processes and behavior of organisms based on genetic and molecular information.

The database is set up and maintained by Kanehisa Laboratories in the Bioinformatics Center of the University of Kyoto and the Human Genome Center of the University of Tokyo . It has existed since 1995.
