On KGS you can play with a web application or with the Go-Client CGoban (current version: CGoban 3.5) published by KGS , which is written in Java and therefore works on almost all operating systems. A Java applet was also maintained for a long time , but this was abandoned in 2015. The connection protocol used by the KGS Go Server is publicly available.

Another special feature of the KGS Go Server is the possibility to analyze the games afterwards with the help of many different tools or to give lessons, which sets it apart from all other Go servers.
