Paolo Mascagni

Paolo Mascagni (born January 25, 1755 in Pomarance , † October 19, 1815 in Castelletto near Chiusdino ) was an Italian anatomist, doctor and natural scientist.

Life

Mascagni came from a family in the province of Siena , his parents were Aurelio Mascagni and Elisabetta Burroni. Mascagni studied natural sciences in Siena, including anatomy with Pietro Tabarrini , and completed his studies with a doctorate in anatomy, medicine and philosophy.

Vasorum lymphaticorum corporis humani historia et ichnographia

In 1787 he published his book Vasorum lymphaticorum corporis humani historia et iconographia , which was published in Siena , which identified him as a specialist in the human lymphatic system and established his professional reputation in Europe. In 1798 he was appointed President of the Accademia dei Fisiocritici of Siena. During the French occupation of Tuscany he supported the Jacobin party, which in the restoration that followed led to his being removed from office by the new government. On October 22, 1801, the verdict was overturned and he was appointed Professor of Anatomy, Physiology and Chemistry at the University of Pisa , with permission to teach twice a week at the Hospital of Santa Maria Nuova in Florence. A little later he was appointed full professor at the University of Florence . At the Florentine Accademia di Belle Arti he taught anatomy to art students. From 1808 he was a corresponding member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and from 1811 of the Académie des Sciences .

Mascagni died during a stay in Casteletto near his hometown Chiusdino on October 19, 1815. His grave has not been preserved, while the tombstone is kept in the local cemetery chapel.

Honors

The city of Florence honored him with a statue in the Cortile of the Uffizi and thus included him in the gallery of the greats of Tuscany.

The mineral, discovered by Dietrich Ludwig Gustav Karsten and first described around 1800, was given the name Mascagnin in honor of Mascagni .
