KGet is the download manager of the KDE Software Compilation 4 . It is programmed in C ++ and distributed as free software including the source code under the conditions of version 2 of the GNU General Public License (GPL).
Functions
Downloads can be conveniently managed with the program : You can start, stop and resume them at will. During the download, KGet will show the estimated remaining time of the process, the amount of data transferred or other information if required.
In addition to HTTP and FTP , KGet also supports BitTorrent and Metalinks . The downloads can be assigned to different groups, e.g. B. different target directories and max. Have download speeds (data rates); you can also set the maximum number of simultaneous downloads per group.
use
KGet can be integrated into the Konqueror browser in order to provide an overview and download selection of all links on a website. KGet can also be integrated into Mozilla Firefox via the additional module FlashGot . rekonq delegates all file downloads to KGet. Alternatively, a drop field can also be displayed, to which references to files can be drawn from anywhere in KDE so that they can be downloaded with KGet. In addition to entering the source address manually or monitoring the clipboard, there is also the option of initiating new downloads via D-Bus, for example using a shell script. In contrast to the direct use of wget and the like, your progress is then integrated in the KDE-wide status display.
As the standard download manager for the KDE Software Compilation, KGet is the standard tool for many Linux distributions .
history
The first version for KDE 3 (0.8.0- RC -1) was released on May 26, 2002. The versions for KDE 3.x only support HTTP and FTP. For KDE Software Compilation 4, KGet was rewritten by Dario Massarin, Manolo Valdes and Urs Wolfer and support for BitTorrent as well as segmentation of downloads and limitation of the transfer speed was added. Furthermore, support for additional protocols can now be added via a programming interface using an additional module. The result was published as KGet 2. It was integrated into the plasma surface with its own widget / applet .
