history

Mirka was founded in Helsinki in 1943 by Finnish engineer Onni Aulo and started production in 1946. In 1962 Mirka moved to the town of Jeppo on the west coast of Finland, where the company headquarters and the factory are still located today.

In 1966 Mirka was bought by Oy Keppo Ab . In 1973 the two companies were merged.

As early as 1960, a large number of Mirka products were exported to the USA, Great Britain and Iceland. Thanks to the growing export markets, production more than doubled in 1965. In the late 1970s, exports accounted for 54% of sales.

In order to survive on the international abrasives market, it was necessary to distance oneself from cheap mass-produced products and instead concentrate on product development and product quality. The first high-quality products were brought onto the market in 1969. In the same year, the production of self-adhesive panes began, which is still one of the most important product groups today.

Since the new products required better production facilities, it was decided in 1972 to invest in a modernized factory.

In 1977 parts of the production were relocated to Oravais . The Oravais plant was gradually expanded, most recently in 2003. The Jeppo plant was also gradually expanded during the 1980s and 1990s. The automated warehouse is Mirka's landmark in Jeppo. It was completed in 1996. In September 2004 a new building, Hall 9, and office space were inaugurated.

The first sales companies were founded in Great Britain in 1976 and in Germany in 1980. The subsidiary in the USA was founded in 1985, followed by Sweden and France in 1992, Italy in 1995 and Spain in 2003. An export office was founded in Malaysia in 1996 and relocated to Singapore in 2000 and expanded into a branch. In 2006 Mirka opened subsidiaries in Brazil and Mexico as well as a representative office in Shanghai, China.

Today Mirka is an international company and a member of the family-owned KWH Group and one of the world's largest manufacturers of coated abrasives. 660 people are employed at the group headquarters and the four production sites in Finland.
