KY-68
The TSEC / KY-68 , also known as Digital Subscriber Voice Terminal , is a resilient half and full duplex telephone system used by the US armed forces . An encryption / decryption module is built into the device for a secure connection.
It transmits voice or data at a speed of 16 or 32 kBit / s, with voice being converted into a digital signal. The KY-68 can be operated at civil or military exchanges in encrypted or unencrypted mode. Alternatively, there is the possibility of a direct connection, this is only possible in encrypted mode.
Although it is primarily used for encrypted connections, the KY-68 can also establish connections to an insecure, digital telephone ( Digital Non-secure Voice Terminal , DNVT). A local exchange warns the user of a KY-68 with a tone signal when a connection is established with a non-secure telephone.
The KY-68 is used at a transmission interface , typically a KYK-13 or an AN / CYZ-10 .
An almost identical version made of a lighter material exists as an office version under the designation KY-78.
The KY-68 and KY-78 phones are both approved for exchanging information up to SECRET rating , and despite being compromised in the early 1990s, both versions appear to be still in use.
