Kaech'ŏn-shi ( 개천 ; 价 川 ) is a city in the province of P'yŏngan-namdo in North Korea with 319,554 inhabitants (as of 2008). 151,088 of them live in urban regions. 61% of the city's area is forested.
economy
Water resources are abundant and there are several reservoirs in Kaech'ŏn. Agriculture has been developed extensively, including cattle and orchards. Machining and metal processing are the dominant industries, and mining has also gained in importance.
Infrastructure
The city is connected to the rest of the country by a line operated by the Korean State Railways .
Labor camp
The Kaech'ŏn detention center and the Kae'chŏn re-education camp are two labor camps in the city. Shin Dong-hyuk escaped from the detention center and reported extremely harsh living conditions.
