Kageras

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kageras is a small late medieval fort in Upper Nubia . It is on the eastern side of the Nile about halfway between the third and second cataracts.

A church was built here in the tenth or eleventh century. A defensive wall was built around this church in the late Middle Ages. The wall was once about three meters high and is still very well preserved today. There are round towers at every corner. There is an entrance to the north.

It is doubtful whether this place measuring just 35 × 35 m was permanently inhabited. It seems to have acted more as a place of refuge for the surrounding, Christian- Nubian population, who in the late Middle Ages apparently had to struggle more and more with attacking nomads .

The facility was examined by an American - Swiss mission from 1966 to 1969 .
