The origin of the university lies in the 1773 founded by Satsuma-Han School Zōshikan ( 造 士 館 , German about "Academy for the education of the samurai "). Although the school closed in the Meiji Period (1871), it was rebuilt as a prefectural middle school in 1878 after the Satsuma Rebellion . In 1901 it developed into the State Seventh High School Zōshikan ( 第七 高等学校 造 士 館 , Dai-shichi kōtō gakkō Zōshikan ). It was located in the former Kagoshima Castle and served as a preparatory course for the Imperial Universities . Wilhelm Süss taught German from 1923 to 1928. In 1946 after the Pacific War it was renamed Seventh High School.

In 1949, the state schools in Kagoshima Prefecture were merged to form Kagoshima University, and the prefectural schools to form Kagoshima Prefectural University ( 鹿 児 島 県 立 大学 , Kagoshima-kenritsu daigaku ).

The state schools merged to form the University of Kagoshima:

  • the seventh high school,
  • the Kagoshima School of Agriculture and Forestry ( 鹿 児 島 農林 専 門 学校 , Kagoshima nōrin semmon gakkō , founded in 1908),
  • the normal school Kagoshima ( 鹿 児 島 師範学校 , Kagoshima shihan gakkō , founded 1876),
  • the normal youth school Kagoshima ( 鹿 児 島 青年 師範学校 , Kagoshima his shihan gakkō , founded in 1924), and
  • the fishing school Kagoshima ( 鹿 児 島 水産 専 門 学校 , Kagoshima suisan semmon gakkō , founded in 1946).

The schools merged to form the Kagoshima Prefectural University were:

  • the Kagoshima Prefectural Medical School ( 県 立 鹿 児 島 医科大学 , Kenritsu Kagoshima ika daigaku , founded in 1869 as the Satsuma-Han Medical School), and
  • the Kagoshima Prefectural Technical Center ( 鹿 児 島 県 立 工業 専 門 学校 , Kagoshima-kenritsu kōgyō semmon gakkō , founded in 1945).

The university opened with four faculties: humanities and natural sciences, education, agriculture, and fisheries. In 1955, the Prefectural University was merged to form the University of Kagoshima. Since 1959, all faculties (except medicine, dentistry and fisheries) have been on the Kōrimoto campus, in the former seat of the agricultural and forestry college.
