The Kalkoven Aruba is a historic lime kiln that is now located in the urban area of Oranjestad . It dates from 1892 and was designed by Santiago Tromp and operated until 1949 by his son Felipe Santiago Tromp (1883–1960). It is the only authentic lime kiln in Aruba that is still intact. Today it is one of the few industrial monuments in Aruba . Previously, simple field ovens without walling were used.

In 1970 it was restored and entered on the list of historical monuments (Lijst van monumenten op Aruba) with the number 01-013.

history

Before cement was imported, all structures in Aruba were built with lime mortar . Back then, the lime was extracted from hard corals and mussel shells and burned over a wood fire for three days. The unslaked lime produced in this way was quenched with water, ground and used in combination with clay sand to build houses. The quicklime was also mixed with the oil from aloes , rubbed and processed into varnish products.
