Kallinikos (Hagiograph)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kallinikos ( ancient Greek Καλλίνικος ) was a monk of Ruphinianai in Bithynia and a hagiographer in the 5th century .

Kallinikos wrote the Vita Hypatii between 447 and 450 , a saints vita about his teacher Hypatios , who had re-established the monastery of Ruphinianai. A stranger brought out the vita under the third abbot after Hypatios and dedicated it to an unknown deacon Eutychos. Corrections were made to Syrian variants of ancient Greek , from which it is concluded that Kallinikos was a Syrian . The Vita contains reports of miracles and paraneses of Hypatios, its value as a church, secular and cultural historical source is regarded as high. The model of the Vita Hypatii was the Vita Antonii of Athanasios .
