Hypatios (bithynia)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hypatios (* around 366 in Phrygia ; † June 30 or June 17 (memorial day) June 446 near Chalcedon ) was an abbot of the monastery Ruphinianai (German also Rufinianä ) in Bithynia and a saint .

Hypatios escaped from his parents' house and began monastic life around 400. In 406 he restored the ruined monastery in Ruphinianai near Chalcedon, which he then headed as abbot. The complete obedience of the monks in the monastery was important to him. He also took care of the pastoral care of the laity outside the monastery; he taught them the true fear of God. His student Kallinikos wrote a saint's vita about him around 450 , which is also considered an important historical source.

In the Middle Ages there was a custom to discuss harmful animals with an (alleged) prayer of Hypatios.
