Kaloyan (Sebastokrator)
Kaloyan ( Bulgarian Калоян , Old Bulgarian Калѡѣнъ) was a Bulgarian nobleman, Sebastokrator von Sredez (now Sofia ) in the Second Bulgarian Empire . He probably belonged to the Assen family and is known as the founder of the Boyana Church .
The only written source about Kalojan is the foundation inscription under his fresco in the Boyana Church, which records that Kalojan is Sebastokrator of Sofia, cousin of Tsar Konstantin Tich Assen and grandson of the Serbian Stefan Nemanjić .
According to the historian Bakalov could Kaloyan father of Sebastocrator Alexander, son of the Bulgarian Tsar Ivan Assen I. have been. He relies on the foundation inscription in the Church of Boyana. Kaloyan was opponent of the pro-Byzantine policies of the Bulgarian Tsar Michael II Assen (1246–1256) and participated in the Boljar conspiracy in which he was murdered during a hunt. His cousin Konstantin Assen supported him in the civil war that followed.
It is believed that Kalojan had the palace of the Roman emperor Constantine I rebuilt and expanded into a residence. In addition to the famous Boyana Church, which is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, he also donated the Sweta Petka Stara and Sweti Nikolaj churches .
