The launch of a rocket without a running engine is called a cold start . The rocket is usually ejected from the launch device by compressed air and only ignites its engine with a time delay. This procedure is primarily used in the military sector. Typical application examples are the launch of rockets and cruise missiles from submarines , ICBMs from missile silos and shoulder-mounted anti-aircraft missiles .
