A camera strap is an accessory for photo and video cameras. Camera straps are available in different designs, starting with simple neck straps up to expandable camera strap systems.

Neck straps

Digital SLR cameras usually come with a neck strap that attaches to the eyelets on the top of the camera. The neck strap supplied is usually embroidered with the brand name of the camera manufacturer and an indication of the camera model or model family.

The neck strap is typically placed around the neck and the camera is then placed on the user's chest or stomach. If larger lenses are mounted, the lenses point away from the photographer and restrict mobility.

There are also neck straps from accessory stores. These are often longer, made of higher quality material or better padded.

Camera straps with tripod thread

Camera straps with a tripod thread , on the other hand, are screwed into the tripod thread of the camera or lens. The top of the camera remains free of bothersome carrying straps. The screw contains a mechanism to allow the camera to rotate on the strap. This can be done using a rotatable snap hook or a ball bearing.

The camera strap must be removed for tripod photography. Alternatively, there are also camera straps that are compatible with quick-release plates. In this case, the quick-release plate is screwed into the camera and the quick-release plate (e.g. with a carabiner) is connected to the camera strap.

Typical materials for the actual belt are nylon, leather and synthetic leather. A steel cable can be incorporated into the camera strap as protection against theft.

Camera strap systems for multiple cameras

There are camera strap systems for photographers who are traveling with two or three cameras. Typical are the combinations:

  • a main camera (e.g. SLR) and a secondary camera (e.g. a compact or a camcorder)
  • two main cameras (e.g. two SLRs with different lenses)
  • two main cameras and one sub camera
