owner

Sir William McLeod Bannatyne (1743-1833) was an excellent lawyer and judge in Edinburgh . In 1812 he lost his fortune and was forced to sell Kames.

That year James Hamilton bought the country house.

The literary critic and essayist John Sterling was born at Kames Castle and spent the first years of his youth there. Thomas Carlyle describes the country house in his Sterling biography as "a kind of run-down baron's residence to which a small farm was then attached".

In the mid-late 20th century, Kames Castle was a local authority children's home.

Today the country house is in private hands. A number of farmhouses in the area are rented out as vacation homes.
