Under the government of Governor Jesko von Puttkamer (1895–1907), the waterworks was part of the redevelopment of Kamerunstadt planned by Eduard von Brauchitsch, district administrator of the city and its surroundings. It was built in the style of the German colonial and industrial architecture of the time. In addition to the construction of wide roads and the drainage of the surrounding swamps, the supply of running water was decisive for the desired urbanization of the traditional village of Douala.
