Kamnaskires I. Soter

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kamnaskire's Soter was an Elymais king who lived sometime between 147 and 139 BC. Ruled. This is the time when the Seleucid Empire was in a phase of dissolution. Local governors rose to the rank of kings in various provinces and tried to establish their own empires. Kamnaskire's soter was one of them.

Kamnaskire's Soter is best known for its silver coins. His exact domain is unknown.

His coins show a young ruler and are entirely in the Greek style. On the back there is the figure of an older god, perhaps Zeus , on the other a younger god, perhaps Apollo . Some authors see him as the same ruler as Kamnaskire II. Nikephoros , who would have called himself Soter on some coins and Nikephoros on others. The coins closely follow Seleucid models.
