Kana ( Arabic قانا, DMG Qānā ) is a village in southern Lebanon , 10 km southeast of the city of Tire and 12 km north of the border with Israel . The approximately 10,000 inhabitants are predominantly Shiites . It is sometimes seen as the scene of the biblical wedding at Cana ( Jn 2 : 1–11  EU ).

history

In 1996 a heavy Israeli artillery attack took place on Cana as part of the Israeli military operation "The Fruits of Wrath" , whereby on April 18, 1996 a UNIFIL facility in the village was hit by the Israeli artillery. Of the around 800 refugees there, more than 100 were killed and around 300 injured.

On July 30, 2006, Kana was hit again by a military strike in connection with the Israel-Lebanon conflict in 2006 . 28 civilians, including 16 children and young people, died in the air raid on Cana , and another 13 are missing. Due to the international reactions, the attack marked the turning point in the course of the war. Under pressure from the United States, Israel agreed to suspend air strikes for 48 hours that evening, which it failed to comply with.
