Canal colonies

The canal colonies were workers' colonies that arose when the Bydgoszcz Canal (in Polish: Kanał Bydgoski ) was built.

For the construction of the canal about 20,000 workers from u. a. Saxony , Thuringia , Anhalt , Swabia and the Sudetenland . They settled along the canal in the so-called canal colonies A (founded June 10, 1794), B and C and took over the construction of the canal.

5,000 people lost their lives in the construction of the canal. The remnants of Colony A were incorporated into the Hoheneiche ( Polish Osowa Góra ) district of Bromberg on December 21, 1908 .

Colony B was near the village of Pawłówek at the Hoheneiche lock, while colony C was south of the canal between Nakel and Potulitz and was incorporated into Występ (Josephinen) in 1913 .
