Canonical name

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In technical computer science, a canonical name is a standardized, distinguished, unique name for objects, resources or users. A canonical name must follow the rules applicable in the respective context. For example, the character set can be restricted so that characters have to be omitted or converted. Therefore, other aliases that do not follow these rules are common.

Example of using canonical names:

  • Object names in the Active Directory
  • canonical name for classes in Java
  • Canonical page name in Wikipedia
