Map of Bouvet Island with Cape Meteor (right) |
Cape Meteor is a cape characterized by steep cliffs that forms the eastern foothills of Bouvet Island in the South Atlantic .
The first mapping was made in 1898 by participants in the Valdivia expedition (1898–1899) under the direction of the German zoologist Carl Chun . The cape is named after the ship Meteor under Captain Fritz Spiess , which called Bouvet Island in 1926 as part of the German Atlantic Expedition (1925–1927). The name of the cape appears for the first time on maps that were created in 1930 as part of the British Discovery Investigations .
