Cape Trypiti
The Cape Trypiti ( Greek Ακρωτήρι Τρυπητής Akrotíri Trypitís ) is a cape on the southern tip of the Greek island of Gavdos and represents the southernmost point of Europe . The name comes from Trypiti three nearby sea arches.
It is located about three kilometers southeast of the nearest settlement Vatsiana , which had 31 inhabitants in 2011. From there there are several hiking routes about four kilometers long to the cape. At the location of the cape itself there is a chair about two and a half meters tall, which marks the point as the southernmost point of the European continent and was supposedly set up there as a work of art by Russians from the village of Vatsiana.
Cape Trypiti is located about 200 kilometers southeast of mainland Greece and 44 kilometers south of Crete . To the coast of Libya it is about 260 kilometers to the south.
