The Reliance Steel & Aluminum Company is a US metal trader based in Los Angeles . Reliance was ranked 305 on the Fortune 500 list of top-selling US companies in 2018 .

history

The company was founded on February 3, 1939 by Thomas Neilan as Reliance Steel Products Company and initially traded in reinforcing steel for the construction industry. A leased area of just over 610 square meters in Vernon , a suburb of Los Angeles, served as warehouse . The company was shortened to Reliance Steel Co. in 1944 . Four years later, in 1948, Reliance added aluminum products to its range and shortly afterwards added magnesium to its range. According to Reliance, this made it the first metal wholesaler in the United States to offer semi-finished magnesium products . After further growth, the company took on a new name for the last time in 1956: Reliance Steel & Aluminum Co. This was to reflect the expansion of the product range. After the death of the company founder Neilan in 1957, his nephew William Gimbel took over the management of the company. At this point, Gimbel had already worked for the company for 10 years. In the following years, other metal dealers were bought and the company's own metal processing was expanded. From the 1970s, the product range was expanded to include non-ferrous metals and alloys such as copper , brass and titanium . Since an IPO in 1994, the shares of Reliance Steel & Aluminum are traded on the NYSE traded. Since 2001, the company has been located in a high-rise building in downtown LA, until then the headquarters were in Vernon.

Today Reliance has over 300 offices in 14 countries. Metalworking and warehousing services are offered to over 125,000 customers.
