St. Georg is a Roman Catholic chapel in the Weiß district of Cologne . The church is at number 8 station on the Rodenkirchen cultural path and belongs to the Catholic parish in the Rheinbogen .

history

The late Gothic chapel was first mentioned in a document in 1433. The certificate shows that the Archbishop of Cologne, Dietrich von Moers, was only informed of the completion by the villagers after the construction. The residents not only paid for the upkeep of the building, but also for the salary of the priest. Ecclesiastically, the chapel initially belonged to the parish church of St. Servatius in Immendorf and from the 18th century to St. Remigius in Sürth . In 1821 the chapel was expanded and finally enlarged in 1923 as part of the elevation to an independent parish.

In the course of the Second World War, the chapel was badly damaged and burned down in 1944. After the war the white people decided to build a new parish church further south with St. Georg in 1953/54. The old St. Georg chapel was rebuilt in its old form in 1965, omitting the extension, as a hall church with a semicircular apse. In the 1980s, the interior was extensively renovated and redesigned. The tracery window in the choir room also dates from this period .
