history

Saint Dionysius, founder of the Holy Trinity Monastery in Litochoro , also founded the chapel of the Prophet Elias in the 16th century . It was built on the ruins of an ancient building. Dionysius, who led an ascetic life, is said to have lived in the little church for a time. The chapel is the highest church building of the Orthodox Church worldwide.

The building

The chapel was built on the top of Profitis Ilias mountain; The stones in the area were mainly used as building material. The floor of the chapel is covered with stone slabs, the outer walls consist of layered stones, without any further connecting material. The roof, which is covered with stone slabs, is supported by a solid wooden structure in order to be able to carry the snow load. A forecourt is protected on the eastern and southern sides by a natural stone wall that has an inlet on the north side. The low entrance to the chapel is on the south side of the building.

Inside are some icons ; a small altar, framed by images of saints, offers believers the opportunity to light a candle.
