The Kapitelberg (also Stoppenberg ) is a hill in Essen 's Stoppenberg district .

It is a hill about 80 meters high in the middle of six other hills. From a geographical point of view, these are foothills of the North German lowlands . The arrangement of the hills gives the impression that they are arranged in steps when viewed. This gave rise to the assumption that the name Stoppenberg developed over the course of time from step mountain. To the southeast, the Kapitelberg is touched by the Essener Straße (L 452) from Essen via Katernberg to Gelsenkirchen .

The first documentary mention is in the year 1073 with the construction of the collegiate church Maria in der Not on the hill called Stoppenberg by the Essen princess Schwanhild . It was consecrated as Nikolauskapelle a year later by the Archbishop Anno II .

After a presumption of Joseph Wormstall in 1906, a who was here tamfana consecrated place of worship of the Marsi .
