The Kaplankyr nature reserve is located on the southern edge of the Ust-Urt plateau in the Daşoguz province in northern Turkmenistan . It extends over an area of over 2828 square kilometers and includes the two specially protected areas Sarykamysh Reserve and Shakhsenem Reserve.
Kaplankyr means “cheetah plateau”, but the big cats are now extinct in the entire Ust-Urt area. In the reserve, there are still Trans-Caspian urials , crop gazelles , honey badgers and half donkeys that were reintroduced in the 1980s . In winter, saiga antelopes from Karakalpakistan penetrate into the Kaplankyr reserve. In total, the reserve is home to 26 species of mammals and 147 species of birds.
