Lap seam

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The lap seam describes a closing seam in which the ends of the fabric are turned over in opposite directions so that at the end both cut edges lie within the fabric. With a lock stitch in the middle of the folded piece of fabric, the lengthwise seam is then set and decorated with a second as a decorative seam.

The lap seam with double seams is often found along the folded fabric on denim clothing and the patch back pockets as well as on the inside leg seams of denim trousers. If done correctly, this decorative seam is machine washable and tear-proof.
